So glad to feature Jennifer Burnham of Pure and Simple Organizing today.
I found her online, after being introduced to her on twitter and funny enough we actually have a mutual friend. Such a small world, and an even smaller Charlotte. Welcome Jennifer!
Closets seem to be the long lost forgotten land. No matter how old or new your home is, my guess is, it could use some updating. I urge you not to jump ahead five spaces and start buying the latest organizing gadget for purses, scarves, and shoes. Start at the beginning.
• Take everything out of the closet.
• Start a donation pile.
• Add anything that fits the following category:
• Broken (holes, zippers, spots)
• Seen its better day
• Does not fit
• Fits but makes you feel awful
• Has not been worn in 6 months
• This goes for shoes, purses, and jewelry
• Separate clothes by season
• Off season clothes should be stored elsewhere
• Under bed storage containers
• Containers that go in another room
• Containers in the garage (labeled of course!)
• Now that you are working with current season clothes that you actually want to wear:
• Sort by style
• Tank top
• Sleeveless top
• Short sleeve
• 3/4 sleeve
• Long sleeve
• Jeans
• Slacks
• Dress pants
• Dresses
• Skirts
• Take an inventory of each pile
• Now to the fun part -- organizing and putting it back!
I highly recommend customizing your closet’s design to meet your needs. However, that might be too much to take in today. Maybe another post -- if you all like me enough! ;)
Remember that going up the wall is the best way to utilize your space. If you don’t have enough room in the closet, then go out. Organize your shoes and purses outside of the closet.
If you can find it, then you will wear it. If it is displayed in a visually appealing way, then you are more likely to switch things up.
