Dwell by Cheryl TV Debut (Video)!

Last Thursday while sitting at my desk working away, I received a call/voicemail from WBTV's Maureen O'Boyle.  If you're local, you know the name because Maureen is a very popular news anchor on the local CBS affiliate.  She left a message saying she was working on a story about budget decorating and the Habitat Restore; two of my favorite things.

Needless to say, I wasted no time in returning her call.  After talking through the details we agreed to meet at the Our Towns ReStore in Cornelius the next day.  Now, here's a little secret; this wasn't my first experience with the news media.  As a Registered Dietitian who worked in School Foodservice, during the height of the childhood obesity epidemic, for a large contract foodservice company, I've been afforded some pretty awesome media training in the past. However, I never would've imagined that those skills would come in handy with my new venture.  You just never know.

In an effort to avoid any added stress, I arrived at the ReStore early and the awesome staff allowed me pull items for the segment, some of which had yet to hit the sales floor.  I piled the basket high with baskets and bottles, artwork and mirrors.  By the time Maureen arrived I was ready to GO.
I took her through most of the items in the basket (and in my car) and then we walked the store to see what other treasures we could find.  Quite frankly, it was hard to tell when we were taping and when we were just talking.  Of course, my news producer little sister informed me that you're ALWAYS taping.  ; )

I really did have a blast and I was pretty pleased with how the segment came out. See for yourself.

There's also a story featured on the website.  Click HERE to link there.

I'm so thankful for my affiliation with the Metrolina ReStores.  Their PR team, Rachel Sutherland Communications ROCKS.  We've got some great things in store for you guys, so be sure to stay tuned in 2014!

Lastly, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Maureen O'Boyle for reaching out to me.  It was a great opportunity and she was super fun to hang out with too.

Wishing each and every one of you a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Homearama Recap (and an announcement)!

Happy Monday all!  I hope you had a great weekend.  I was able to attend the HomeBuilder's Association of Charlotte Homearama this weekend and take in a little design.  I thought I'd share with you a few of my favorite spaces, but before I do I have a little announcement.

This afternoon I'll be on the Stretching Your Dollar segment with Maureen O'Boyle on WBTV News (Charlotte).  I'm so excited.  If you're local, be sure to check it out on the 5:00 p.m. newscast.  We're shopping the Habitat ReStore for great home decor deals, ideas and inspiration on a budget.   I'll recap the experience here a little later, but for now, let's check out some great spaces.

Bear with me, there are a lot of pictures, but who doesn't like looking at pretty design photos.

According to the website, "HomeArama homes encompass the latest styles and materials for living areas, kitchen and bath design using cutting-edge, energy efficient products."  The tour featured six innovative homes on beautiful lots.

The homes this year featured lots of color, and we know I do like color.  I loved the use of coral here.

I also noticed lots of graphic print drapery, which made me feel pretty good about the most recent update at my house (tell you about that later).

After seeing so many interior doors painted, I was convinced that I'm going to start making my way through my house painting mine.

We saw loots of fun laundry spaces.  It's an often overlooked area, but I think that may be changing.  How cute is this? I love the red tile backsplash.

This next home featured a good bit of grey mixed with pops of color.

I loved this little nook and the Moroccan inspired fixtures.

Each home featured a great outdoor living space.  I liked that this one linked so well to the adjacent family room décor.

Another space with a great use of color.  This purple and green was perfection.

But even better than the color scheme was this awesome ceiling. The herringbone design is to die for.

I love decorating kid's rooms and I thought some of the kid's spaces featured offered some great ideas.  I like the use of abstract art in this boy's room.  Not exactly something I would've thought oink of doing until now.
There is just something about a room with twin beds....
Most of the homes featured common areas like this one.  Great spaces for kid's to do homework.
Needless to say, they had me at Ikat in the soothing guest room.
I noticed this window treatment in several homes.  It's a faux roman shade but such a modern alternative to the traditional valance.  You WILL see this again.
There were lots of cute mudrooms.  I photographed this one because the bench was such a unique piece and I love me some contrast piping.
This space actually reminds me of my latest client project.  I love the coolness of the blue and green.  Not sure how practical those stark white sofas are, but they're pretty nonetheless.
Another open concept family room that spills out into the outdoor space with hideaway pocket glass doors. I love how this completely connects the two spaces.
Another beautiful ceiling...
My favorite home was actually the one I have the least photos from.  However, I did manage to capture this eat-in kitchen area.  I love the juxtaposition of the classic tufted upholstered dining chairs and the modern metal chairs.
I also fell in love with these orb fixtures in the master bath.  I was completely intrigued by the rolling metal cart between the vanities.  I'm not sure what cause you to need to move a cart around the bathroom, but I do like the idea of having that option.
I have to be honest though, my friend and I were a little underwhelmed this year with the whole tour.  I'm not sure if it's the fact that I'm completely immersed in design these days and as a result have higher expectations or if it just wasn't as good as it's been in the past.  Whatever the case, I was able to leave with a couple of new ideas.
Hope you had a great weekend!

"Fiending for a Juju"

A recent Color Theory homework assignment has me fiending for a Juju.  What's a Juju?  So glad you asked.

The Juju hat is also called a Bamileke headdress or Tsa Ntang Disc from the West African nation of Cameroon. The Bamileke culture is a culture known for their elaborate celebrations. Royal dancers wear this headdress during ceremonies that celebrate the prestige of the kingdom. In the power and status category, this feathered "hat" from Cameroon boasts striking plumage dyed in vibrant colors. These headpieces traditionally made from parrot feathers, however they are now more commonly crafted using dyed chicken feathers. The construction of the headdress is extremely intricate and several individuals work to complete one headdress, which can take several days to complete. The design is such that the headdress is made to collapse inward for easy storage or transport.

The Bamileke headdress or Juju hat as it is commonly referred to in the US, has recently become a very popular trend in the interior design community. The hats are positioned on a wall; above a bed, armoire, mantel or elsewhere as a high-impact piece often providing a pop of color. Their soft feathers instantly provide texture to an otherwise flat wall surface and easily add visual interest.

They are typically used in more modern spaces, but more muted tones including variations of white have been popping up in much more traditional spaces....

...proving the fact that they are pretty darn versatile.  Since the plan is to go white in my home office, I'm now dying to have a Juju of my own.

What do you think of the Juju?

"A Stenciled Backsplash"

Hi there!  Hope you had a great weekend. As promised, I'm back today with a follow up post from my latest install.  As I mentioned, my clients were looking to pull together the look in their family room.  The space is an open concept and flows into the eat-in kitchen area.

Of course, that meant not only did we need to update the living space, but we also needed to address the adjoining spaces as well.  With budget in mind, I sought out inspiration for ways to give the kitchen a bit of an update.

Here's where the power of social media comes into play.  I follow so many talented designers, DIYers and bloggers on social media that my feeds are always flooded with great ideas.  This one was courtesy of Saudah Saleem Interiors.  She posted one of her client projects that included this gorgeous stenciled backsplash.

Gorgeous, right?  I knew this would be the perfect solution for my client's space as well.  After browsing the vast selection of small scale wall stencils on Cutting Edge Stencils' website, I landed on this trellis print.

Cutting Edge Stencils

We began with an nice empty surface that was the perfect spot for a graphic design.

And with the already proven (See HERE) process, I dove right in.  Needless to say this project was much easier than my last stenciling venture.  It took about 3 hours to do three sections of the kitchen wall space.

I chose a light creamy almost iridescent white.  I actually picked it up at the Habitat ReStore on a recent trip.  The small space and the small scale print didn't require much paint at all.  I think it totally does wonders for the kitchen.  See for yourself....

A small investment of time and money paid off once again.

I love it so much, guess what I think I'm going to do in my kitchen.

"Fun Family Room Reveal!"

It’s my favorite day- REVEAL DAY!

It’s always so much fun to see a design literally come to life and to then share it with you all. Today I’m revealing my most recent project and probably one of my favorites to date.  I always say that, don’t I?

This was a makeover with a quick turnaround.  Luckily the clients gave me a great start with superb wall colors; Sherwin Williams Moody Blue and Balanced Beige.

I’m filing this awesome neutral gray beige in my great paint color archives.

We started with a space that wasn’t exactly in need of an update, it actually just needed to be pulled together.  It never ceases to amaze me how impactful things like drapes, a good rug, color pillows and finishing touches can be.  If you have any doubt about that fact, you won’t after this.

Let’s do it, shall we.

The family was looking for a more modern, yet kid friendly space and after seeing their paint colors, I immediately knew what direction we should go.  I find that when looking to achieve a clean and modern look, (in most cases) it helps to limit the color scheme to include only two or three colors (with variations).    I knew a rich golden rod would strike just the right tone against the Moody Blue.  And boy was it “moody”.  While I love the color, it was a difficult blue to work with.  It could read either blue or green depending on what was paired with it.  In the end, we made it work.

We also spruced up the attached dining area and kitchen.  A bold Moroccan trellis print on the drapery and a simple gallery wall with black and white family photos finish off the adjoining space.

I tackled another stencil project in the kitchen.  Apparently I'm a glutton for punishment.  The trellis print was repeated here to create the look of a backsplash.  I’ll talk more about the specifics on that a little later.

Such a fun project for a fun young family.
