"Ottoman Upgrade"

Back in January I blogged about upgrading my ottoman/coffee table.  It was originally a McCreary Modern floor model that I scored at the Habitat ReStore in Hickory.  I fell in love with the massive amount of storage it provided, but I knew I'd eventually need to have it reupholstered.  It took me a couple of years, but I finally had it done and I couldn't be happier with the result.

I opted for the same fabric my vintage sofa is covered in and dressing the piece up a bit with a fun nail head trim.

Mark of Baity's Custom Upholstery did an amazing job.  We tossed around a few ideas but ultimately settled on this design.  He really is a genius when it comes to bringing a vision to life, because my sketches often leave a lot to be desired.

I can hardly wait to settle in on a chilly fall evening someday soon and put my feet up on this beauty.

For the spring and summer I've been using my new gold coffee table which I love, but this one is so much cozier. It's almost hard to believe what it looked like before.

I love how unifying the sofa and ottoman seems to elevate the space a bit.  Kinda fancy, right?

I change out the pillows for fall and I recently had a few new custom ones made.  The more neutral palette is perfect for fall.

Sometimes getting things just right takes a bit of time.  I've found that when I'm patient and really hold out for what I want, I'm never disappointed in the end.

Have a great week!

"Upholstery Makeover: Ottoman Upgrade"

Well, it's that time again.  Time for another upholstery project.

McCreary Modern

Sometimes it takes a while for me to get going on a project.  It's really a bit strange when you consider that other times, I can't move fast enough on getting things completed.  Whatever the reason, I'm finally addressing my coffee table/storage ottoman.  You may recall when I picked it up on one of our ReStore shopping trips to the Catawba Valley ReStore.  I blogged about it HERE.

It was a great piece of McCreary Modern furniture with tons of storage and it was a steal.  I purchased it with the intention to have it recovered, but honestly the longer I kept it the more used to it I became.

The dolphin gray color doesn't exactly work with my current color scheme but it also doesn't fight with it either.  It's sort of an afterthought and I'm ready to fix that.

Originally I thought I'd used this ottoman with a contrasting strip that I spotted at High Point Market as my inspiration.  I was thinking I'd add a huge dose of color with a graphic fuchsia stripe down the middle.  However, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to select something that would work for years to come.

Ultimately, I decided to go with the same fabric that I used on my camelback sofa makeover several years ago.  I figure having the two act as a set will allow for changes later on and produce a grounding affect that will allow my other accessories to take center stage.

Of course, just covering it with a piece of golden cream fabric doesn't seem like much fun so I'm going to punch it up a notch with a nail head trim.  I'm thinking about getting a little fancy here.

Zinc Door
I've been pinning some ideas and hope to make a decision and send this one off to Baity's Custom Upholstery soon!

"The Reinvented Recliner"

Whew!  What a week last week was!  Thankfully I made it through and as promised I'm back to share with you guys the details of the wingback recliner in my recent client project.

First off, when your client tells you she NEEDS a recliner in the living space, you deliver a recliner.  I'll admit however, sourcing a chic recliner on a budget is no small feat, especially when your upholsterer has mentioned on several occasions that he hates recovering recliners.  Thankfully, you have a really good relationship with him and he makes an exception for you.  ; )

First I needed to locate a vintage option that had a streamlined silhouette that would work well with the plan for the space.  Thankfully, I was able to score this Lane Furniture wingback recliner on Craigslist.

I know, it's pretty bad, but the best ones always are.  I decided on a navy blue cotton blend for the interior of the chair and decided to go with a blue and cream herringbone print on the exterior.

Mark worked his magic on this piece and I don't begin to try to understand what that means exactly.

All I know is that when I get that final text message with the finished product, I can hardly believe the transformation.

We decided to dress it up a bit with a nail head trim. How awesome is that result?

So awesome in fact, I had a really hard time giving this one up.  I think there may be a recliner in my future.

The finished product was absolutely amazing in the space.  So sophisticated, yet so comfy.

In addition to the recliner, Mark also spruced up a pair of leather ottomans I found.

It's amazing how a simple faux leather trim and a few brass nails elevated the look of these two.

Yet another case for the value of reinventing furniture.  Speaking of reinventing furniture, I'm pleased to announce that I'm a contributing writer in this month's Pride Magazine.

Have a great week!!

"Upholstery Ideas and Inspiration"

It's no surprise to anyone that I love upholstered furniture.  I'm addicted to it really.  Sometimes I wish I had a larger home just so I could add more furniture, mainly upholstered pieces.  So when I go to High Point Market twice each year, I love keeping a watchful eye out for new ideas for giving vintage upholstery a modern lift.  Thankfully, this year's market didn't disappoint in that area.

Let's just say I kept my upholsterer on speed dial sending over great ideas for how we might upgrade vintage pieces.  You likely recall when we added this racing stripe to a pair of classic vintage wing backs.  How great would it be on a large ottoman.  NOTED!

This waterfall skirt was just lovely.  Especially with the contrasting border.

Isn't it amazing how something a simple as the white trim can up the cool factor on this simple navy sofa.  Skirts are often great options for vintage upholstery makeovers because so many vintage pieces tend to have a lower seat height than what is standard today.  Skirting allows you to conceal taller legs which can definitely work in your favor.

I'm a sucker for contrast piping and this example is an example of why.

I am totally obsessed with this idea.  So good!  Not sure what type of chair I'd like this on, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

I spotted a number of sofas with bordered cushions.  It's a great way to create a designer look and could easily be accomplished even if reupholstering isn't in the plan.

Lastly, I think this is a great idea for what can be done with small remnant pieces of fabric.  Lord knows I have more than a few pieces of leftover velvet.  These vibrant colors would pop in almost any space and could be changed out seasonally to create a new look.

I'll be back soon with a recap from market, but for now just thought I'd pop in to share a few of the great ideas for future upholstery projects.  I can hardly wait to get started on my next one.

ReStore and Reupholstery

Thanks so much for your kind words following the reveal of the nursery.  I'm really pleased at how it turned out and best of all the clients loved it.

You know it's not a Dwell by Cheryl project if  I don't include at least one furniture transformation and this project was no exception.  One of the elements that I knew was essential in this space was a rocker/glider.  Nurseries all have a few must haves; crib, changing table, storage and a chair (preferably a rocker or glider).  I went on the hunt for a vintage chair that would fit the bill.  One of the issues I often face when sourcing vintage furniture pieces is the difference in scale of today's pieces.  Vintage seating has a tendency to be pretty low and that was not going to work here.  Dad-to-be is not a short guy and I knew he would appreciate an appropriately sized chair to lull baby to sleep.  Enter the Our Towns ReStore of Statesville....

On a random Saturday I headed to Statesville in search of a few goodies with a rocker/glidder top of my list.  As you know, I'm not a big fan of having a list to source deals (I blogged about that HERE), but in this case I needed to find something pronto.  Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this....

The wing chair is by far one of my favorites.  Its classic lines and large scale make it a comfortable option for use in a variety of styled spaces.  However, I don't know that I'd ever even seen a wingback rocker.  This was indeed perfection!

I shipped it off to the upholster and opted for water resistant green fabric.  I figured that could come in handy in a nursery.  I also added a bit of pizazz with lilac piping. It's amazing what contrasting trim can do.

It never ceases to amaze me how fresh fabric can completely transform a vintage piece.

Upholstery by Baity's Custom Upholstery
Pretty amazing to see the before and after side by side.

It looks even better in the finished space.

I found this new feather-filled orange velvet lumbar pillow at the Catawba Valley ReStore and had it monogrammed.  I like that the pop of orange used sparsely throughout the room breaks up the predictability of the color scheme.  The hardest part was determining what to stitch on the pillow.
I hadn't intended to add a bench but on that same trip to Catawba Valley, I ran into this precious purple and white ticking stripe bench and couldn't leave it behind.  I love that the Catawba Valley ReStore has great new (mostly high-end) furniture pieces.
It makes the perfect perch beneath the reading wall.
This project provides another great example of how I use finds from the Metro ReStores to outfit my client's spaces.  In the end, they get way more bang for their buck and I get a gorgeous project to share with you.  I call that a Win-Win!
