"Autumn Updates: Ready for a Change"

Swooo! It's been a rough week. I apologize for the infrequent and less than in depth blog posts this week.  I've got a lot going on, to say the least.  Today, I'm just popping in to share with you the quick update I'm giving my master bedroom.

I've grown tired of the current space.  Not sure if it's the seasons changing or the fact that after six years, my style is beginning to change.  Whatever the case, I've decided to go with a warmer color scheme for fall and winter. 

As a decorator, you can accumulate a lot of things in your stash that come in handy when you decide to update your own home.  I actually picked up this Spring Sparrow Pottery Barn duvet cover at a warehouse sale for nearly nothing a few months ago.  I had no idea that it was Pottery Barn when I purchased it or what I would do with it, but the price was too insanely cheap to pass on.

I'd been stalking the matching pillow shams on the PB website and lo and behold, they went on sale today so I scooped them up.

I actually found bedside lamps similar to those pictured above at Goodwill a month or so ago and picked them up for $5 each.  I also had some medium sized square lamp shades that I ended up not using in a client project recently that worked perfectly with the wall mounted lamps.



Bed Bath and Beyond

I also scored a pair of these natural drapery panels at the same warehouse sale.  I really need four for my bedroom windows, but I've decided to cut them in half to create smaller panels since the windows are pretty narrow anyway.  I picked up a couple of cream twin sized flat sheets on clearance and I'm having the new "half" panels lined so that they are more opaque.

I stumbled upon these awesome framed fern shadow box art pieces for $4.99 each at Goodwill.



They've added just the natural look I'd hope to create and work really well with the bird duvet.

Now I just need to update a couple of accessories and I'll be all set.  Can't wait to share with you how it turns out.  More to come...

"Yard Sale Recap"

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a great weekend.  In case you're wondering, I had a FABULOUS yard sale.  I set out with a goal of getting rid of some inventory and making a enough cash to offset the cost of my fall (design school) tuition.  No sense paying, if I don't have to, right?  I'm happy to report...

 

I accomplished both.  Whoo-hoo!! Hard to believe that when I came home from work on Friday, I didn't have a single item taken out for the sale.  Thanks to help from a friend/co-worker, we quickly pulled together a good amount of really nice things to get rid of. 

 

 

 

I'm a big fan of organization at yard sales.  I don't like for my customers to have to get on the ground or rummage through boxes, so I used skirt hangers to hang drapes, shams, pillow covers, etc.  It just makes shopping so much more pleasurable. 

 

 

I also try to group like items, this was my art/wall hangings area...

 

 

I figured most of my customers would be women (they were) so I threw in a few pieces of jewelry just for good measure.  Needless to say at $1 each they bought almost every single item.

 

 

 

After the humidity burned off, it was a pretty nice day.  It helped that I had good (and appropriate) reading material.

 

 

One of my favorite parts of the sale was socializing.  Believe it or not, I have yard sales so frequently that I actually have repeat customers.  This young lady stops by every year just before returning back to school at Appalachian State.  When she first visited she was a freshman and purchased a really cute black and white damask floral print futon from me.  This year, she's a junior and I hooked her up with some queen size sheets.

 

I was super excited to meet a couple of my Dwell by Cheryl followers.  Tasha Renae (@_tasharenae_), one of my big time Instagram buddies and fellow blogger Shannon of Burlap and Lace. I had no idea she lived around the corner.  And, can I just say that her blog is FAB.  I spent the better part of Saturday evening reading posts on her site.  Check out this awesome coffee table she recently got at an auction.

All in all, it was a great morning.  Unfortunately, I did have a couple of items that didn't sell.

 

Like this great Pier 1 tea set (tray sold).  It's still available if you're interested. 

 

The bottom line; I would highly recommend having a yard sale.  Why hold on to all of that stuff that you haven't used or want to replace?  The sale did leave me with a couple of holes in my décor so you know what that means.  : )

I love Thursdays.  Not just because it’s Friday eve, but lately because it’s the day that ABC’s Scandal come on.   I literally have to schedule my entire evening routine around that show.  And, from the looks of my social media feeds, timelines and posts, I’m clearly not the only one.

I’m even more intrigued by the well-designed spaces featured on the show.  For example, have you noticed how simply cozy her apartment seems to be?  It’s typically dimly lit and she’s usually sitting in a comfy spot in deep thought, or nestled snug in her luxurious bed on the phone with Fitz.

Speaking of her bedroom, It’s really not a look that’s all that difficult to achieve.

So maybe having an Olivia Pope bedroom won't get you a drama-filled Olivia Pope life (not that you'd want it), it can make for a very cozy, luxurious and reasonably affordable space.
