Behind the Blog: "What You Didn't See"

It's hard to believe it's been almost a year and a half since I launched my business and blog.  In some regards it seems as if it were just yesterday, and in others like it was years ago.  I love having a platform to share my design thoughts, projects, ideas, inspirations and general musings.  However, I have to admit that some things I strategically neglect to share.

Case in point, my recent glass cabinet door project.  Sure, from your vantage point it may have seemed like a cut and dry project, but in reality it wasn't at all.  Have you ever noticed how the designers on tv always have a carpenter working with them?  Well, we creative-minded folk often have grand ideas but we often lack in the area of figuring out the most effective way to execute said ideas.

So here's what you saw; I started out with a builder grade cabinet that needed an update.

BEFORE

I ended up with this lovely open and airy glass door cabinet.

AFTER

Now for what you didn't see.

You're unaware of the fact that, because I don't actually own a saw, I used a utility knife to score both sides of the center panel of the door.  You're unaware of the fact that after I scored it, with a utility knife nonetheless, I used my weight to "carefully" kick the center panel out.

You're unaware of the fact that once I had my glass cut, I still hadn't quite figured out how I was going to get it in/on the door.  My first idea failed miserably so I decided to chisel away a little of the wood surrounding the opening so I'd have enough space to slide the glass into the groove.  Really scientific, right?  Did I mention I did this with a utility knife?

You're unaware that just when I had enough space cut away, I moved the glass in such a way that caused it to break a huge chunk out of the corner.  Did I mention that I waited four days for that piece of glass?

You're unaware that I decided to use glue on the second go round, but I neglected to buy the gun thingy to dispense the glue and ended up spreading it on with a butter knife.  Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.

You're unaware that when I finally had the glass installed and all was in place, it actually looked a little shotty inside.  Wonder why?

And this my friends is why I do as little DIY at my clients homes as possible.  Some things are better left to the professionals.  Nevertheless, for the intent and purpose of this blog, this is all you need to know....

Until next time....
