"Motivation: Whatever it Takes"

I have a confession. I'm not really all that ashamed to admit it because I suspect that I'm not the only one. Not to mention, it seems to happen every year.

It's January 15th and I still have two of my four Christmas trees up. I try not to beat myself up about it, given the fact that most people only have to contend with one, and I had four. My goal was to take one more down this weekend, but it just didn't happen. I'm realizing that I'm just not a superhero and I can't do it all.

There are only 24 hours in the day. I've developed a system for keeping myself motivated because as I mentioned earlier, taking down the trees can be depressing. I've decided for each tree that comes down, something new goes up. Cool, huh?

In the kitchen, when the tree came down new place settings and new drapes went up.

And in the Master bedroom, the tree came down and I traded my pink star for a new sunburst mirror. You know how much I love them.

I set out this holiday season to add more gold to the room and this new mirror works like a charm.

I like it. It's the little things. And, whatever it takes for me to get those trees down, right? Two down, two to go....

"A Blogiversary, 200th and a Vlog"

New Year's Day marked the one year anniversary of Dwell by Cheryl. Seems like just yesterday I was eagerly awaiting the midnight hour to push the Publish post button on blogger to officially launch the Dwell by Cheryl blog/website with this post. And if that weren't enough, today is my 200th post!

Wow! 200 blogs. Honestly, I can't believe I was actually consistent for an entire year. I think I was fueled by everyone's positive feedback. Can't tell you how much it means to hear so many of you say that you start off your day by reading my blog post. What an honor. And just to let you know that I listen, as a follow up to yesterday's reveal, I'm posting my second vlog (video blog).

I realized while doing this last project that so many people struggle with decorating particular spaces within their home and one of them is the mantel. So, this vlog provides some simple tips designed to help. Keep in mind that this was a bit of a spur of the moment thing, so please excuse my lack luster attire. I promise I would've chosen something more festive if I'd known that I was going to produce a video after the install. Nevertheless, here goes...

Once again, thanks to my videographer and sister Charri. She was getting pretty good by the time I left home. Let me know what you think, and be honest. I wore my big girl undies today. Lol!

"The $642 Makeover Reveal"

We'll it's 2013 and it's back to the grind. Let's do this!

I'm excited to share with you today a truly budget friendly makeover. The entire project from start to finish was only $642. While at home, I had the opportunity to do a quick makeover on my Aunt Sarah's upstairs sitting room. She recently had the room repainted and was looking to give it a fresh update.

We were looking to do something light and airy and well, coastal....

I shared about the project recently HERE. So without further delay, here it is....

As a courtesy to my clients I don't typically share prices and sources for items used in their projects, but my Aunt was thrilled to let me share with you guys how far you can stretch a few dollars.

I used this great Lowe's sunburst mirror to create a focal point on her small fireplace mantel. We'll talk more later about this on my next post.

This small Kirkland's lamp was just the right lighting for my Ikea hacked end table.

Seating was essential but the space was extremely small. We opted for this mocha colored loveseat from Ashley that happened to be on sale at a local discount retailer.

She already had two of these Target seagrass dining chairs and they were the perfect addition to the coastal vibe we aimed to create.

The Ikea nesting tables and these gold sconces were also used. For $12 each, they were a no brainer.

For just $642 we created an entirely new room with a coastal color scheme, low priced retail finds, a few well placed accessories. Proving once again that design really can be within reach.

"Garden Ridge Branches Out"

It had been a while since I visited Garden Ridge, so I decide to stop in yesterday.

If you recall, I'm obsessed with Garden Ridge's throw pillow selection. When I don't have them custom made, Garden Ridge is my first top for a great selection of pillows at hard to beat prices.

This multi-colored chevron was hott!

These were embroidered and looked way more expensive than they really were.

Garden Ridge also has a large selection of rugs including small accent rugs. I thought this Moroccan trellis was too cute, and at $4.99 you could afford a back up.

I actually went looking for a large mirror and the selection was unreal. They've definitely amped up the offerings. I love the sunburst in the top left corner. So very me. Unfortunately, I think it's a little too literal for my current project.

These mirrors were priced from $19.99-$79.99 depending on size. That's much cheaper than they're sold for elsewhere.

For example, this option is available online for so much more at $459.

Home Decorator's

I'm not really sure why you would need (or want) to spend so much more for an item that literally hangs on the wall. This is definitely a time to "save" instead of "splurge". It's just not worth it.

I also loved these Tiffany (Chiavari) chairs. They scream dinner party. Super chic!

I also noticed that Garden Ridge seems to have branched out in terms of the styles available.
I saw inexpensive accent furniture in a varitey of styles. Industrial....

Modern....

Traditional....

Cottage....

This same lacquer side table was on One Kings Lane this week for double the price.

and country....

I was actually really impressed with the options. Of course, it's Garden Ridge furniture so these are not the most "solid" pieces, but if you need a small accent piece, I'd say, "Why not?"

And, it wouldn't be a Dwell by Cheryl blog post if I didn't mention my favorite place.

Prior to stopping at Garden Ridge, I went by a Goodwill that I had been dying to go to. I picked up these lamp shades for $2.99.

I thought they were pretty handsome and would make a great complement to some accent fabrics that I purchased this weekend.

Lo and behold, what do I spot on the lamp shade aisle at Garden Ridge?

"Kickin' it at Kirklands"

I've been spending a lot of time at Kirkland's lately, and I must say that I have been super impressed with the great selection of merchandise. You may recall me mentioning in a past post that Kirkland's is one of those places where you can quickly get carried away. But it's seems that they've really stepped up their game.

I've had my eye on these seagrass lamps for a while now.

Great for use in creating a casual (even beachy) feel.

At $49.99 (and Kirkland's $10 off coupons readily available), I'd say that's a pretty good buy.

This modern screen isn't exactly what you'd expect to find at Kirkland's but I love it.

I can't tell you how many times I've looked at this glass behive lamp. I really like the beehive shape and the tinted glass. I guess I'm holding out to see if it hits the clearance section anytime soon.

Let the Sunshine In!

I mentioned in the Dwell by Cheryl (DBC) preview post that I was really in love with sunburst mirrors. I’m just amazed by the options and the impact that a sunburst mirror provides. They’re slowly becoming one of my signature decorative items. What I like most is the fact that you can find them everywhere from Frontgate to Family Dollar. Yes, I said Family Dollar. I don’t discriminate. You’d be surprised what you can turn up if you don’t box yourself in to specific retailers.

I’ve already used them in three spaces so far.

This one’s on sale now at Kirkland’s (In stores only). I love the texture the leaf motif creates. I think it would do wonders for a ho-hum neutral wall.
