"Cheryl, how do you decorate for fall and it look natural without (A.) Having to buy all new decor (from wall art to pillows) or (B.) Putting out a single piece and it looking random? Any recommendations?"
It's a great question, and not to mention perfect timing. I walked out the door this morning to 56 degree weather and I was ecstatic to see that the season was changing. Nevertheless, it does present a new design opportunity.
Here's my approach.
1. Only purchase items that will take you from September thru November. I don't know about you, but I'd prefer to get the most out of my investment. Halloween and Thanksgiving specific decor additions limit the length of time they can be used. I opt for more generic seasonal items like these....

Weaving classic autumn decor into your home limits the investment needed and the items can be used over and over each year.
2. Let nature lend a hand. One of the feelings we're trying to create with autumn decor is that warm cozy feel that fall naturally evokes. So why not go for the real thing instead of a duplication?

4. Lastly, don't forget about smells. Often it's not what people see in your home that creates the mood, but what they smell. After all, that's why we make fresh bread or cookies for open houses. This time of year fall scented candles and such are not only easy to find but also fairly inexpensive.
Bath and Body Works currently has over a dozen autumn scents to choose from.
I hope this helps. There are tons of ideas online. Personally, I'm thinking about tackling this project this year.

Thanks so much for this post, I was looking at a fall wreath today for $30, read this and realize I have a box of large pine cones in the attic.... might need to look around and see what else I have.... Watch out squirrels, we are gonna fight for those acorns!
Glad it helped Bonnie.
Great suggestions! I suffer from the opposite issue...have bought far too much Halloween "stuff" over the years. Went down to the basement this morning to retrieve the Halloween "Bin". Was horrified/amazed to find not one but *7* Halloween Bins!!! Will definitely scale back-starting this year-and follow your suggestions to use more natural decorations and things which have more lasting power throughout autumn. Thanks!!
Tara, So glad you found it useful. Don't feel too bad, I have the same problem with Christmas decor.
Speaking of Christmas decor...I need ideas on decorating ROUND dining tables. Both my formal dining and breakfast nook tables are round. I like the idea of using runners (i.e., Pottery Barn's At My Table - November 2012), but just not sure.
Nadia, sounds like a great Tell Dwell Tuesday question...
Cheryl- Thank you for posting such fresh ideas. Modern yet warm holiday decor is sometimes hard to come by! I felt like Halloween ran right into Christmas this year... I stumbled across your blog while seeking out some Thanksgiving inspiration. This is just what the Doctor ordered!
Thanks so much, Fancyantlers. Glad you like.
